Robert Pater

Robert Pater, Managing Director
Robert founded SSA and the MoveSMART process based on his education in Industrial Psychology (MA) and Organizational Development (BA), his extensive work with corporations and organizations worldwide, and three decades of training in several martial arts. Robert has worked with groups at all levels of organizations and now focuses on consulting with and presenting to senior executives, managers, and organizational professionals. He has keynoted and presented at numerous association conferences including the National Safety Congress, American Society of Safety Engineers, Canadian Society for Safety Engineering, and many others. He has also developed custom keynotes and presentations for a wide range of corporate conferences. Robert has been interviewed on his approach to leadership on ABC World News, CNN, as well as on many other television and radio shows and been profiled in Investors Business Daily, Training magazine, Darwin, Entrepreneur, Success magazine, The Motivational Manager, and many others. His articles have appeared in Professional Safety, Safety + Health, Industrial Safety & Hygiene News, Occupational Health & Safety, Compliance, Nation's Business, and many other publications. In 2005, he is writing a monthly column, The Safety Catalyst, for the magazine Occupational Hazards. Robert has authored three books: Leading from Within: Martial Arts Skills for Dynamic Business and Management, The Black Belt Manager: Strategies for Creativity, Power, and Control, and How to Make High Impact Safety Presentations. He is a Professional Member of ASSE and a member of the National Safety Management Society.

Ronald D. Bowles, Director of Operations
Ron is Director of Operations for SSA, with more than twenty years of experience in safety management, training, and as a safety consultant. Prior to joining SSA Ron created many innovative safety improvement processes, some of which include:
  • developing training and systems to assist organizations in identifying their "Level of Accepted Risk," and strategies to help them to build and encourage a culture of personal control for safety
  • designing and leading the implementation of several behavior-based safety processes, with a successful history of initiating statistical and cultural change within organizations from throughout the U.S.
Since joining SSA Ron has worked with Robert Pater to further develop our Direct Attention training for boosting attention, judgment, and decision-making skills. In addition to Ron's practical and extensive background as a safety professional, and his experience conducting safety training for literally thousand's of people, Ron is also a talented public speaker who has made many well-received presentations at both regional and national conferences. He is an active member of the Mt. St. Helens Section of the ASSE.

Paul McClellan, Director of MoveSMART Systems
Paul is a former U.S. Army Paratrooper, a Senior Defensive Tactics Instructor for the Oregon Police Academy, and an Instructor of Wing Chun Gung Fu. As a MoveSMART Consultant and Instructor since 1990, McClellan has worked extensively throughout the U.S., as well as in countries such as Australia, Russia, Great Britain, and Venezuela. Paul’s clients include BF Goodrich/Michelin, Harley-Davidson, Amerada Hess, and Phelps Dodge.

Craig Lewis Craig R. Lewis, Director of Strategy
Craig manages contracts and legal issues, and works on a variety of other strategic issues for SSA. He has presented MoveSMART programs in South America, Europe, the Middle East, and throughout the United States for many of our clients including Amtrak, Bell Helicopter, Boeing Aircraft, BP, Coach, Frito Lay, General Cable, Michelin, Phelps Dodge, Precision Drilling, Xerox, and many others. Craig practiced law before joining SSA, and initially learned of MoveSMART while training in martial arts with SSA staff.

Charlie Braxton Charlie Braxton, Consultant & Instructor Trainer
Charlie has a B.A. in Communications along with a 3rd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and training in Wing Chun Kung Fu. His clients include Detroit Edison and Earthgrains and he has worked with Kodak, BP Amoco, American Airlines, United Airlines, Anheuser-Busch, Bell Helicopter Textron, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Exxon and many other companies worldwide. He is a Member of ASSE.

Rob Russell Rob Russell, Consultant & Instructor Trainer
Rob has a degree in Business Administration and has worked as a Radio Announcer, Personnel Specialist for Boeing, Human Resource Manager for a local bank, and had his own company, Russell Consulting. He is a Past President of the Portland Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) and is a Member of ASSE.

John Glenn John Glenn, Consultant & Instructor Trainer
John is a Physician's Assistant who worked in emergency medicine for three years before joining SSA. Previously he worked as a family practice provider for Indian Health Services, a branch of the United States Department of Health & Human Services.
